My Needs Or Their Needs?

I was reflecting on the story of Jesus feeding the multitudes with 5 loaves and 2 fishes this morning from Mark's gospel and as I was reflecting I began thinking about my business and the businesses I've worked with. How many times did we run our businesses based on our own needs versus delivering products and services that fit the needs of our customers. Jesus was never preoccupied with his own needs, in this reading he is focused on making sure that all those that are listening to him eat and are nourished, not once do you hear him say, "I'm hungry, let's eat".

Too many times in business our focus is on our own needs, what we want for accomplshments, how much money can we make, what else can we buy. If we focus on the idea that our products and services take care of the needs of others not too mention give our employees a place to work in an environment that encourages taking care of the needs of others then we make a dramatic shift in how we do business, putting the needs of others first. This is one of the ideas of servant leadership and I think one of the key concepts in creating a successful business. As Zig Ziglar used to say, "help enough people get what they want and you will get what you want".
